Project summary
Ganesh Puri is a forest and wildlife ranger at the Department of Forests, Government of Nepal. He is a member of US-based Fishing Cat Conservation Alliance (FCCA). Besides small wild cats’ conservation, Ganesh has been extensively worked for wildlife trade monitoring along India and China boarders. He has presented his works in national and international conservation forums and published in scientific books and journals.
For this project, Ganesh work closely with local communities along Indo-Nepal boarder to reduce the direct pressure on the potential habitat of Rusty-spotted cat. He train and engage the communities in alternative income generation activities such as bee-keeping. He also conduct the series of awareness and training programs for his staffs and local community members to control the forest fires in his project sites. Every year, Ganesh prepare nurseries of native tree species and plant a Rusty-spotted cat home in collaboration with local community members in the degraded forest habitat in Western Terai Arc Landscape!


Goal of Project
The overall goal of the project is to protect the Rusty-spotted cat and its habitat along Indo-Nepal boarder in Western Terai Arc Landscape.


Objectives of Project

  • To prepare nurseries and plant the native trees in the degraded habitat of Rusty-spotted cat and sympatric small wild cats in Western Terai Arc Landscape
  • To train and support the local forest dependent communities for alternative and sustainable income generating small-scale enterprises such as bee-keeping and organic farming.
  • To repair and maintain predator-proof chicken coops of poor poultry dependent farmers
  • To conduct series of community and school outreach programs to raise awareness on Rusty-spotted cat and other small wild cats
    To enhance the capacity and support local wildlife rescue centers
  • To reduce road-kills of Rusty-spotted cat and other wildlife along the roads and highways that intersect the potential habitat
